Chaiperson Leithead-Todd, Members of the Committee On Planning
Aloha. Good Morning.
My name is Adrian Barber. I reside at 13-1276 Leilani Avenue,
Pahoa. I have the privilege to serve my community as President of
Puna Malama Pon, a non-profit corporation dedicated to taking care
of the environment in Puna. We are proponents of the State of
Hawaii's Constitutional guarantee's to the people of Hawaii,
particularly the guarantee of a healthy environment. We are equaly
vigorous in our opposition to being poisoned in our beds and
having other intrusions made into our lives by improperly
regulated industry, rampant development and schemes that are
designed to make some absentee rich person richer at the expense
of our environment and our health and our safety and the health
and safety of our children.
The Mayor is taking the mandate of a minority, 390, of the voters
and embarking, in our perception, upon a rampage. He and his
appointees appear bent on forcing down the unwilling throats of
the people of this island a program of dismemberment of the
restraints on the concentration of power emplaced by previous,
more concerned, more civic minded, less venal Administrations. We
were yesterday presented in the Hawaii Tribune Herald, which is to
be complimented on their reportage, with the distasteful picture
of an appointed body of the Mayor's. the Planning Commission and
his Planning Director, Ms. Virginia Goldstein accepting what can
only be seen as bribes of accommodation from a luxury hotel that
is in the process of negotiation with tYie Planning Department.
These people would have you remove more of the restraints on their
overweenig ambition. I'm very sure Ms..Goldstein is very eager for
you to remove any reference to Environmental Impact Statements
from the County Code. We deplore this naked attempt to snatch more
of the power of decision from the hands of the Democracy. [fie ask
you not to subscribe to it. Vote a resounding "NO" to Bill 703 and
particularly to Bill 100. We can not rely anymore upon the
assurances of this Administration. Strike a blow for Justice. Just
vote "NO".
