County Council _
Aloha, Respected Public Servant,
I rarely write letters - I'd rather do my communicating in person, but it seems
that it may be vital to let many of you know as soon as possible how I feel
about legalizing gambling in the County of Hawaii.
I am distressed to see that Rep. Chang's bill has gotten as far as it has!
Gambling brings with it high risk of large money gains -for the
underemployed, unemployed and the "carpet-bagger" who comes to the area
to take advantage of the money available. We ALREADY have illegal
gambling here, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the people
involved are more often those who can ill afford to risk their limited
resources.
PLEASE do not bring gambling to our island, or our state, for
that matter!
If you read David B. Gomes' letter in WEST HAWAII TODAY on
Monday, February 17, 1997, you saw that he classified all human activity in
one of three categories: beneficial, neutral or destructive. All you need to do
is observe the impact on communities that have gambling to see that we don't
want these destructive changes in our society here. We akeady have enough
problems taking care of our residents ho are wanting, without bringing in
more unsavory elements and stressing our people.
Please do NOT allow legalized gambl g to come to the Big Island.
Thank you for taking time to read this
Sincerely,I
Virginia L. Harris
