Subject Withdrawal of Recommendation -Solid Waste Management in East Hawal'1
Dear Chairman Arakaki and Members
After evaluation of several proposals, on November 30, 2000, a recommendation of a provider
and plan to handle East Hawat'i's solid waste was made to you After careful review of the
County's situation, we hereby withdraw that recommendation
The County of Hawai'i's Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan is scheduled for a maJor
revision and update in 2001 The purpose of this plan is to assist the administration and
Council In making decisions that will direct the futwe of solid waste management for the
entire County Therefore, we feel it is more appropriate to complete this plan first so it can be
utilized in future decision-making regarding the direction the County should go in managing
its solid waste stream In addition, we need to look island-wide at solid waste issues, not only
at East Hawai'1 because the landfill is scheduled for closure
We look forwazd to working with you and the people of the County of Hawaii as we develop
a practical plan that well aid us in handling our solid waste in an effective and efficient
manner
