Hawaii County Planning Committee
Aloha,
Aloha, my name is Richard Mastronardo and I live in Kukuihaele
Village I am a homeowner as well as a business owner and have lived and
worked in this community for the last 12 years I am writing this letter on
behalf ojTom Heers and Bruce Wilkes. I met both gentlemen and their
families about 8 months ago. !n the beginning, myself as well as a good
portion ojthe community were skeptical about anyone bringing new
developments into our area again. They had
just given their wholehearted
support to a prior Deeveloper with a very large project only to come away wrth
a bad taste in their mowhs.
Then, Tom Heers and Bruce Wilkes moved into Kukulhaele Pillage
with their jamtlies. They became a part of the community and jlt in as If
they lived here jar years. We got to knave each other as neighbors and the
community welcomed both families with open arms
From Jhe beguating, both Tom and Bruce were up front with the
community in regards to what they were planning to do. There were a
number of public meetings held at the Kukuihaele Social Hdl by the
Kukuihaele Community Association Concerns were expressed and
questions answered AjTer meeting Tom and Bruce along with their families
on a persona! as well as business level the consensus was that they truly
cared about the input of people in Kukuihaele Pillage Once again the
majority of Kukuihaele Pillage has come together in support of their
project. It is comforting to know that Tom and Bruce do not look or act like
developers but are in fact very upstanding family oriented men with high
integrity
1 feel that we are fortunate to have both Tom Bruce as well as
their jamtlies living, working, caring about and 'vin t our cam Wily

To Hawau County Counctl
From Robert Impson
Subject Trees of Kukwhaele
I have owned [lie Last Chance S?are for the previous eighteen years and have witnessed the
previous two rezonings of the land *.hat is once more under zoning change consideration
Unfortunately for some residents of this community, who badly reeded the employment, the
previous projects fades to matenahze
The failure of previous ventures is fortunate in a way, because I believe that the "Trees of
Kukwhaele° w•i,l still provide a much needed boast to the area bin in a much less obsti usive
vvay. This is a village that once had a movie theatre, hotel, fail, schools etc , in other words a
small but thnwng community The elders of the vdlege ere not excited about the slow
distingeration of then birth place But at the same time we do not want to turn the
villageir~ral lifestyle on its head This small development, with your proper and realistic
conditions, wtll enable some to come home again, and others to stay
Waipio Valley should not be impacted any more than if the tounsts who wine to visit the valley
were staying ~n Kone or tw•e miles away es in this project Weipio impacts, end how to deal
with its problems are another subject
Some will say that I back this for rtry own benefit. I will benefit, which in turn will benefit
others m the community What has always concerned me the most is what would benefit me the
most--that someone would utilize this land to its specific pmseni zoning of sitgle family
residential, which would allow for a subdivision across the road from the store This
community does not need or want that Huth progress
Thank you,
Robert Impson
To whom it may concern
In Jum of 2000 I was hired by Tom Hears to build the kitchen cabinets and do
miscellaneous woodwork and in the restoration project of the plaatation manager's
residence in Kukuihaele. Tom pcrmitted me to set up my woodworlong shop in the
garage of the Ohara house. As eo empbyer I found Tom a pleasure to work for. He
wouM always consider suggestions and constructive criticism fi+om myself or any other
local residents that he had hired The paychecks were fair and on time. Tom ahvays took
the time to notice any extra effort of an employee and never fails to recognize it with a
"thank you Any criticism was always fair and handled in a sensitive manner.
During the six months that I worked on the project I came to know Tom and later
Bruce Wilkes and their families quite well With both families I am very impressed by
the closeness of there family units. No phase of the project could be important enough to
keep the family from taking lunch together. At pau ham you would always find the
family singing s song together or ta0cing end laughing poolside as they all joined together
for a swim. Their moral standards are extremely high and I believe will set an excellem
example for the youth of our community. Although they are new residents m Hawaii
they live there lives with abbe. They have demonstrated to me a keen desire to learn the
Hawaiian way and to fully become a pert of our community.
As a part of our community Tom and Bruce have a strong desire to keep our
community much as they found it when they fast arrived. They are committed to
minimising any mgative impact in the development of The Trees of Kytnriharle. This is
demonstrated by there desire to keep the mainstream of the traffic of there guest off of the
Old Government Main Road by conshucting the access and parking lot to the resort on
the upper mad a~ not providing a public thoroughfare to the lower road. The tree
houses have been designed to blend in with the existing landscape widhout the removal or
destruction of the present trees. The positive impact on the community of course will be
much needed employment for many of the local residents
If there is any person or group that have concerns about this project, I encourage
that you to go by their home and talk story. I am certain that you find them receptive to
your suggestions and concerns and very easy to tallc to.

To Whom It May Concern:
We were really disappointed that we were not able to attend this important
meeting. However, we feel that our letter of support will speak in behalf of
our absence and hope it will be of great benefit to your decision.
We have 2 very respectful and wonderful families that have moved into our
community last year, with only good intentions to help the people and their
community. They have come to start their homes here and to raise their
children in an environment that they feel comfortable. Not only have they
chosen to start their business here, but it is also their home. They have held
meetings welcoming the community with open hearts and listening to what
the people's concerns are. They took into consideration these concerns in
the planning of a new beginning.
New beginnings are good for every community. Change is good in a
community. It gives us much opportunity to strive and to grow from, not
just es individuals, but as a community together.
We feel that the tree house developement will bring favorable opportunities,
for employment as well as self employment and be of great help and benefit
for generations to come. We know that much planning has been put forth
into this project in keeping the beauty of the land and respect of the
community et heart and mind.
Respectfully,
s~~

To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Paul Christensen I have been a resident of Kukuihaele
for 68 years. This is where I raised my family and I have as much property
adjacent to the proposed project as any resident in Kukuihaele.
I feel this retreat would be a strong benefit to this community and its
residents. There have been several meetings and I know this proposal has
been well exposed to the individuals of the community. The owners are
concerned citizens and residents of Kukuihaele and have spent a fair amount
of time getting to know and develop good relationships with everyone.
I feel this would not have a negative impact to the Waipio residents
and all of us who appreciate this great wonder.
I support the Trees Of Kukuihaele and feel the community will be
enhanced with this type of retreat and the new opportunities it brings.
S' cerely,
'
