As a follow up to your January 9, 2001 memo to Councilman Tyler, we request that
further action by the County Council be deferred pending issuance of FEMA's study
some time in the month of April
The heavy flooding resulting from the November 1 and 2, 2000 storm in Hilo, prompted
the Federal Management Agency (FEMA) to reevaluate the Flood Insurance Rate Map
(FIRM) for portions of Walakea and Palai Streams According to a FEMA official (San
Francesco Regional Office), their engineering consultant well review and reevaluate areas
that did not experience flooding but are currently in designated flood zones Similarly,
they will review areas that ded experience flooding but not currently designated as flood
zones
According to the current FIRM, portions of the Waiakea and Palai Streams flow over
portions of the Waiakea Heights Subdivision. However, it is worth noting that no storm
runoff occurred in any portion of Waiakea Heights Subdivision Because residential lots
in the Waiakea Heights Subdivision were not flooded, the flood zone designation may be
reduced or eliminated
