COUNTY COUNCIL
CounryojHawa'i r
Harw'i CaauyBw/dwg
23 Arpwd Street
Hilo, Harm Y 96720

To. All Members of the Committee on Finance
From Aaron S Y Chung, Chairman
Subject Creation ofSub-Committee on Technology and Cotnmunicatrons
Recent wunctl action has paved the way for the administration to pursue an eight
million dollaz microwave relocatton and system renovation. Given the large cost of this
prn~ect and its importance to the welfare of this community, I believe that tt would be
prudent for this committee to keep abreast of its ptrogress every step of the way
On a somewhat different, yet related, note, I also believe that the County should
be actively positioning itself to take advantage of all opportunities that developments in
technology have to offer us, pamculazly in light of our strategic Pacific location
I am therefore proposing for the committee's consideration the formation of a
sub-committee on technology and communications to be headed by Councilmember Gary
Safank I believe Mr Safank is ideally Butted to serve in such capacity given his
expenence and knowledge to the area of telecommunications As chairperson, Mr
Safank would be given the discretion in selecting tits sub-committee members.
This sub-committee will, among other things:
a. Hold meetings or public heanngs for the purpose of providtng or obtaining
information for the benefit of the committee,
b Serve as a liaison between the council and the administration on technology
mfiastiucture projects and other issues, with a particulaz present emphasis on
the microwave relocatton and system renovation project; and
c Evaluate and provide recommendations to the committee pertaining to the
following technology disciplines
