We congratulate all who planned and carried out the improvements to
Liliuokalani Gardens and Coconut Island. May we express our thanks and
admiration for a job thoughtfully and beautifully done. The wide,
gently curving walkways, the ramps, the fishing pier improvements, the
new restrooms, the additional parking, the new plantings and the new
picnic areas will greatly add to everyone's enjoyment. It will be
appreciated by all who have the opportunity to visit it, including
both visitors and residents.
We hope that Lihiwai Street will soon be reopened. This street, as
it passes Liliuokalani Gardens, is the only place in Hilo where we can
admire the view of Hilo Bay as we drive nlong. In the daytime, we have
the wonderful view of our beautiful bay, with Mauna Kea in the
background. At night, we can enjoy the lights across the bay as they
reflect on the water. This is really a great tourist attraction, with
the kind of view that many visitors expect of Hawaii.
The accessibility to the handicapped is possibly the best on the
entire island, and it will be even better when the road is reopened.
(More handicapped people are limited by walking distance than by need
to use a wheelchair.) Anne, who has a balance problem, has missed
being able to see the view while the road has been closed, since she
cannot walk at night in the dark. We hope that the road will soon be
reopened, so we cen again enjoy driving by to see the view.
