Dear Chairman Arakaki:
It has come to the attention and concern of the Veterans on the Big
Island, that a central, multi-use combined Veterans center is a
absolute necessity.
The Twenty Nine (29) Veterans organizations of the Big Island have
agreed to form a Ad Hoc Steering Committee, which would be given
the responsibility to plan and organize the effort for obtaining,
the land, the funding, and the construction of a combined Vets.
Center. We Recommend the Veterans Center to include, a Center for
all Veterans to use, the V A Administration office for counseling
assistance, the Primary Care Center that provides Medical treatment
and assistance, and the State Veterans Affairs Office.
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter # 6 has started the
project by forming the Adhoc Steering Committee consisting of 10
Committee members from various 29 Veterans organizations on the Big
Island, plus Pat Pavao from Veterans Affairs Office.
The Steering Committees objectives is to obtain the land near the
Keaukaha Military Rservation KMR. The specific location is at
incl 1. Second, propose building plans adequate to meet the needs
of all Veterans Organizations and Agencies. And Third pursue
funding from all avenues for construction of the building.
The purpose of the combined multi-use Vet Center will be for the
use of all Veterans Organizations, VA Admin. Ctr., Primary Care
Ctr., Community Activities, such as Student Projects, Elderly
coordinated activities, Job Orientation for Veterans, VA Volunteer
Training for Veterans, Youth Activities, such as Boy Scouts, Girl
Scouts, 4H Projects and ROTC Student Training Activities, and serve
as a Civil Defense Disaster Shelter. This Veterans Center will be
a definite asset to the Hilo Community and the Big Island of
Hawaii.
The purpose of my letter to you, Mr. Arakaki is to request your
concurrence and endorsement of such a project and facility within
our community. We feel the Vet Ctr. would accomplish many useful
objectives and purposes in our community. By placing all Veterans

activities in one central location, it becomes much more
accessible, we can reduce the cost of operation by approximately
50$ for VA Admin. and also be assured of a Vets Center for many
years in the future.
Mr. Arakaki, your support and concurrence for this project will be
greatly appreciated. The 29 Veterans Organizations on the Big
Island and this Ad Hoc Steering Committee will be very grateful for
any assistance you provide. Thank you very much.
