Phone (808) 961-8311 Fai~80sy9~6~.-8X1 1~ ~ j M P,meravtdr,;<.fla~ DATE February 21, 2001 TO Dominic Yagong Chair, Enwronmentai and Parks Committee FROM Pat Engelhard Director RE Closure of Part of Lihiwai Street (Perimeter Road at Ldwokalani Park) The response I have gotten from members of the community has been similar to yours Most callers seem to want Lihiwai Street, between the Coconut Island entrance and the entrance by "Isles", to remain closed I would support that closure Mayor Harry Kim has also expressed his support I would, however, ask that the road only be cordoned off, not removed completely Since skateboarding, roller blading and bicycle riding seem to be popular all over Hilo but especially in Lilwokalani Park, I would like to suggest that the asphalt roadway be allowed for those activities but that they be banned from sidewalks and other areas of the park The official closure of the road could coincide with the opening of the entrance to Coconut Island The road is presently closed to accommodate repairs to the parking lot as well as the bridge spanning the ocean between the parking lot and Coconut Island That project should be completed in mid April, just in time for the Merne Monarch Festival I would welcome your Council resolution to close the Ldwokalani Park portion of Lihiwai Street to further use of vehicular traffic.
