A RESOLUTION TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE CRUSE SHIP
INDCSTRY BY ESTABLISHING HILO HARBOR AS A HOMEPORT FOR A CRUISE SHiP
AND PROMOTING HILO AS A CRUISE SHiP DESTINATION
Vb'HEREAS, poai economic conditions m Ha~~ai't County. and especially m East
Hawaii, dictate that we look at ways to improve ow economy, and
WHEREAS State Representative Jenv Chane is pioposmg a resolution to the State
Le~_islatwe regarding the creation of a task force to study the possibility of estabhshmg a
permanent homeport foi a cruise ship m Hilo Harbor. and
WHEREAS. many economic benefits will be denied from increased cruise ship visitors
and the establishment of a homeport in Hilo Harbor, including increased retail sales of local
products. increased employment opportunities foi Big Island residents. and increased hotel
occupancy rates, and
WHEREAS. at least I?0,000 cruise ship passengers visit Hawaii County yearly and even
more visitors are forecast foi coming years, and
~4'HEREAS. the estimated expenditures of these cruise ship visitors m Hawaii County
range fiom ? nulhon to S?-} i million per year
VOW'. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COLTCIL OF THE COLITY OP
HAW'AI'I that rt fully supports the effons of political and business leaders m promoting Hilo as
a civrse ship destination and Hilo Harbor as the homeport for a cruise ship
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk of the County of Hawaii is
directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Harry Kim, Mayor of the County
of Hawaii and the Honorable Jerry Chang, State House Representative, and to the State
Legislature.
