Several years ago, Shipman was allowed to go through with ita
development plan to revitalize Keaau. Instead this quaint historic town
was destroyed. The mall is a failure, instead of benefiting, many
merchants have gone out of business and its community destroyed.
Must we repeat this mistake over and over again. Why not ask Shipman
to add to the existing development; revitalize the community center so
that youths will have a place to congregate and play, create a park area
for family picnics and hikes, and add more restaurants and gift shops to
the existing mall. There are several dilapidated buildings that can be
replaced Keaau would become a real town center, generating revenue,
and increasing its citizen's quality of life.
I believe Puna County has the unique opportunity to set an example not
only for the big island, or even the state, but also for the entire country.
We have the choice to recreate livable and workable town centers that
benefit all of its citizens. You, our representatives can help us bring
back the quality of life we are all working so hard to get back to.
