RE Keaa'u Housing Community Needs County cAUndi
As previously stated at the Committee on Planning meeting on January 23, 2001, I, as the
owner and president of Day-Lum, Inc and Day-Lum Rentals & Management, Inc I have
been involved with residential housing and residential communities in the Keaa'u area for
21 years In this capacity I have had hundreds of tenants and currently oversee the
management of approximately 150 individual rental homes in the area I am also the
property manager for Hawaiian Paradise Park with 8,835 house lots, and Keaa'u Ag Lots
with 322 residential lots These subdivisions boast approximately 2,790 houses with
continuous construction and growth occurring in both communities
The people in these communities desire and need additional services in the Keaa'u area
The proposed Gateway Shopping Center could include stores, offices and services that
will provide for the daily needs of all residents in the community and will eliminate
undesired trips to the `Big City' of Hilo The additional amenities will enhance the
opportunities for residents to make Keaa'u their shopping and business destination It
will help to make Keaa'u a town with a greater community focus
The current cost of building and development and the commercial regulations that
businesses must comply with make it costly and difficult for individual stores and offices
to build in a new area
