Dear Councilman Safank
As a Puna Distnct resident, I am asking for you not to support the proposed Gateway Shopping
Center on the Keaau bypass road Listed below are some of my reservations
- Retail and cornmerc~al areas already exist m Keaau town The present shopping area
needs to be mamtarned and expanded Open space ~s available for further development m
the "town" area where previous businesses were located Let the rural area of Puna stay
nual Encourage development m area presently m existence
- The town of Keaau needs to be refurbished to meet the present needs of Puna residents
As m Mmes past, the commumty needs to be built around a central location with
comprehensive services including Police, Fire, churches, banks, commumty centers, retail
and commercial areas
- A shopping center down the road from Keaau High School would encourage students to
walk on the shoulder of the bypass road It is a busy road It would be dangerous to
encourage foot traffic there
- The bypass road was built to facilitate traffic flow to lower Puna Shopping center
business would disrupt the flow of traffic on Highway 130
-Let us not neglect established areas of commumty for what appears to be bigger and
better As new shopping centers developed m Hilo over the years, older centers have
become commercial grave yards which are detract from the beauty of our island
Thank you for your attention to this matter You are urged to vote NO to the Gateway Shopping
Center
