As a Kona resident who is orLgirally from the Hawaiian Homasteada
of Keaukaha and Panaewa, I am opposed to the Shipman Gateway
Shopping enter for the reasons and concerns listed below.
1) The development w_11 daatroy the "smal_ tcwn" charm and
character of the Kea'au area,
2) Malls and shopping centers are typical "urban sprawl"
symbols which have historically ruined rural and
agricultural districts in many parts of the mainland. Kea'au
needs to capitalize on its unique qualities which would come
from revitalizing .he town itself and not building an "eye
sore" shopping center.
3) Whatever happened to Shipman's plane to re-do the town?
Those termite ridden buildings were torn down in order to
construct buildings that fit in with the natural character
of the community. ?lease ask Shipman to stick with its
former plans of revita~izing the towr. and "scrap" the plans
for its shopping center.
4) Unfortunately, our General PLan does a lousy job of
addressing the special "character" and anique qualities cf
an area.* It lacks vision and fails to point out that when
an area's unique qualities are enhanced and revitalized, it
becomes an extremely valuable economic asset. Tourists wil_
love to visa= the area because there is none like it and
folks will be attracted to live .n the area. It's real
simple.
Please do not approve Shlpman's Gateway Shopping Center.
