On behalf of the Royal Order of Kamehameha 1, Moku O Mamala Hoa, Heiau O
Mamala Hoa, Helu Elua, I would like to clarifi' the position of our organization, with regards
to the placement of a Kamehameha Statue in a proposed Hilo bavfront site.
Although we agree that the statue can be in the Hilo area, we are absolutely~gainst
placement of a Kamehameha Statue or statuary at the proposed site between Bishop and
Pauahi Streets along the Kamehameha Ave, in Hilo. In our opinion this site and any site in the
tidal wave zone is unacceptable. The two tremendous tsunamis of 1946 and 1960 are proof
enough of our skepticism. We regret the Kamehameha Statue Committee's reluctance to
reexamine there choice of site and to attempt to place statuary in honor of Hawaii's greatest
hero in an area which was completely obliterated by past tsunamis. Statuary is supposed to be
placed in an area to stand the test of time, obviously at this site it will only be a matter of time.
The Royal Order of Kamehameha I is the oldest Hawaiian Society in existence, having
been formed by King Kamehameha V in honor of Kamehameha I in April of 1865. We have been
established in Hilo for 90 years. We have and will continue to contribute our mana'o and
thoughts when and where we feel it necessary.
For the rxord we would like to offer alternative sites to the placement of this statuary.
1. The Post Office courtyard on Waianuenue Ave.
2. Across the street from Union Elementary School (now vacant)
3. On the site of the proposed Kamehameha Schools/ Bishop Estate Campus.
4. University of Hawaii, Hilo Campus.
5. Waipio Valley lookout.
In addition we have never agreed to bear financial, maintenance, security or liability
costs for this project and regardless of a Hawaii Tribune Herald news article,. we do not surport
the statuary's placement at the proposed site.
Also to our knowlege, thjs proposed site is not as historically significant as the area near
the Wailuku River.
It has also come to our attention that the Naha Stone now in front of the Hilo Library
may also be moved to this site. Again for the record any movement of this most sacred stone
will be adamantly apposed by the Royal Order of Kamehameha I. Thank you for your
consideration in this matter.
