Subject -Hawaii Island Humane Sodety refusal bo pitk up cat and kitberrs
On March 21'r, Wednesday rooming, at about 11:00 A.M. I reoelved a call from Ms.
Berrtadetbe Alves. She called to see If I could help her with a cat that had dust had kittens
at her apartment complex. She said she had called the shelter and they refused to pick up
the cat. Ms. Alves then asked to speak to the manager and was told that was bo whom she
was speaking. Ms. Antes saki she was bold to bring the cats M to the shelter, however, she
explained she dkMt have a ar and had no way to get them there. The manager refused to
help and replied that ft was not In their conhact.
I found out In talking m Ms. Alves that this was a tame cat that sorrreone had brought In
and left. she could not take her in the apartment, as cats are not allowed. The cat and
kittens had been put in a basket under shelter by the front door but she couldn't leave them
there and had no one tb help her get them 1p the shelter. I bold her I would help her.
I arrived at the apartment oomplex approximatey II: 50A.M. The tat was a large short hair
black tat, very tame, in exodlart oondldon. I picked her up and put her in a carrier with
her kittens. I arrived at the shelter a IItHe after 12:00 noon.
On arriving at the shelter an officer was unpacking a box In the front offkx, the manager
Kathy Bossenmeyer and Sandy Coif were also In the off(oe. Sandy gook the cat and
information. The tats Intake number Is 41938. Grayson, you and two other women were
In the back offke. One young woman came out to help with the tat. When I left at
approximately 12:30P.M. There were two other offks•rs at the shelter. Ms. Antes apartment
is in the Kealakehe area, 10 bo 15 minutes from the shelberl
Ms. Alves reported that she had also called the humane society b report a man, from her
aparbnent complex, tltrovvlnq rocks at a large turkey. The humane sodety saki they dont
handle this problem and bo call a Wild Ufe agency in Waimea, she called and they dedirred
tb help and they referred her to the pollee. I spoke m Offloer Rabara who happened bo be
in the Kealakehe area when I pldced up the cat and he Immedi~ely responded. Ms. Antes
is extremely appreciative of Officer Rabara's assistance as she had been having thefeeling
that no one really cared about animal welfare.
