re: marijuana, ICE, & helicopters
Aloha Aaron:
I'm asking you to re-consider your decision on requesting Federal
dollars to continue making helicopter runs looking for marijuana
Since this Federal grant must be applied specifically for helicopter
rentals and does not provide funds to increase police staff, it actually
reduces available police on land.
Our police staff should not be flrttrrrg around in helicopters looking for
marijuana patches. Their attention needs to be focused on the ICE
(Crystal Meth) epidemic in Hawaii County.
More and more robberies and domestic violence, including child-
abuse, are connected with the use of ICE. There is limited police power
on our island and I believe that dollars should be spent on prevention
and control of the use of this highly additive, dangerous drug.
By comparison, most marijuana smokers end up in a sort of stupor
and are unlikely to do anything violent.
When a disease becomes an epidemic, communities need to shift gears
and direct enormous resources on controlling that emergency. ICE is
)ust tike that; it is fast becoming a survival issue for families here. We
need to put mari)uana helicopters on hold
I am grateful for Nancy Pisrcchro, Curtis Tyler and Julie Jacobsen who
had the courage to vote against the funding for helicopter rentals.
Please vote with them when this matter comes to the Council for a
decision. It is a matter of priority.
