Provide 90 volunteers m elementary schools to tutor children who aze reading below grade level Would like to know what schools this is being done in? Perhaps they could be utilized in current literacy programs that are ongoing at Kona Schools. There aze currently 26 schools partictpatmg to this RSVP activity Fourteen aze located in East Hawaii, and twelve in West Hawa~`~. A list of the schools is attached for your information They do assist the literacy programs at available schools. 2) Recreatton objective #4. Plan, organize and implement a minimum of one distnct-wide event that is responsive to the respective community's needs and Interests. Would like to know why there is none thus far in N/S Kona District? (There is also none thus far indicated for Puna/Ka`u District.) Puna/Ka`u Dlstnct Is planntng to do an Easter Project and Bike Program. N/S Kona Dlstnct has responded directly to Mr. Tyler wtth the following Infonnatlon: Intermediate School Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments were held, and a Punt, Pass, and Kick program was held in the fall. 3) Information regazding Parks and Recreation facilities and activtties should be at the W HI Mayors office. The information is currently available at KCAC where Administration has an office with a reservations clerk for West Hawal'r 4) Veterans Advisory Committee meetings should be scheduled in Kona as well as Hilo. We will schedule future meetings in West Hawai`I or Waimea 5) Questions regazding the Orangutan Foundation and the lease agreement Wants more information and update on their project. Tlus information was forwazded to Mr. Tyler on 4/3/01. JULIE JACOBSON: 1) Would like to see the playground equipment that was removed at Kurtistown and Mt View for safety reasons, replaced with approved equipment. There is a CIP appropriation that was submitted for the 2001-02 fiscal yeaz. This needs funding for allotment, and the equipment will be replaced. 2) Requested fill for Kahuku Pazk. Is this going to be done? Parks Maintenance is working with George Lacy on the community project. We have already provided soil and amendments, and will continue to provide materials when the group is ready to proceed. 3) Is it possible to leave a few lanes at the pools available for public swim while different clubs or school groups aze using the pool? We will follow-up with Aquatics Division to see if this is workable at any of the pools. NANCY PISICCHIO: 1) What happened to the custodian position at Konawaena Pool? Can it be reinstated? The position was needed at KCAL and relocated there to accommodate staffing shortages. Previously, we could not request additional positions. We will look at creating and staffing a custodian position as funding permits. BOBBY JEAN LEITHEAD-TODD: 1) Would like to know if the playground equipment at Clem Akina Park can be reinstalled. This is also in the CIP budget for 2001-02 fiscal, and will be replaced when the appropriation is approved, funded, and allotted. JAMES ARAKAKI: 1) Wanted to know tf we have enough money for maintenance of Veterans Cemetery, and the status of the request for additional funding from the State. The State bill is still in committee. The cost of operating the Veterans Cemetenes is approximately $110,000 a yeaz. If passed, the bill for $62,000 from the State will replace the current $20,000 we receive. That means that ~f the new bill passes, we will receive about 50% of the operating costs. This does not include replacement of equipment that is sometimes needed. GARY SAFARIK I) Would like us to look into improving the lighttng at the field adjacent to Pahoa School. There aze two fields adjacent to the school. The one that Mr Safank is refemng to may be a DOE field. The field close to the elementary school is our field AARON CHUNG: 1) He wants to develop a master plan for the zoo to make improvements and develop the natural rainforest assets of the current zoo. We will definitely work with Mr Chung and the Council on the effort to optimize and expand the conservation, education, and recreational opportunities this unique asset can offer.
