Good morning Mr. Chairman, members of the county council and
Mr. Lee. '~'E~`~

I have a golden opportunity today. I have y attention and I consider this a
great responsibility on my part to be here. As you can tell, I am not one to be
placed in a position such as this. I am here however because throughout all
the meetings we've held as a community we have been told over and over
again the importance of doing our "homework", of collectively working
together to engage in dialogue with you..for me it was awake-up call as far
as accountability on my part. I needed to do my share to assure myself, my
family, my neighbors, that we had done everything we could to impress
upon you the need to study, redesign, and construct a. new bridgesat ~.ueu tau z
Kawailani, and address the problems of the Waiakea Stream, including the
maintenance of the stream and addressing the needs of displaced families,
finding some resolution for them, so they may make better decisions for
their future. My family and those of us on Mailani St. have been most
fortunate to rebuild our homes whereas the three homes closest to the
channel are in limbo. I feel for them and I will continue to be haunted by the
Moyers's forced move to Washington, forever wondering how we had failed
them. I do not want to be in that same position in the next flood.
The flood video you saw, although a glimpse, and taped hours later, has I
hope made a lasting impression on you. Multiply this vision by the number
of families impacted by the flood, each with their own "story", and I hope
you will be compelled, commited to the Waiakea Stream flood problems. I
hope you understand now, not only the losses, but the fear we share, fear of
the channel's incapabilities, fear of phsyical, emotional, and financial
hardships, fear of people forgetting and not understanding our commitment
to these flood issues...I thank the council for responding to my letter, and I
thank Mr. Lee for addressing my concerns. I realize we are all awaiting
FEMA's report before we can clearly make any decisions. And we all look
forward to that with great concern. Please, please find some way to help us.
