Dominic Yagong, Chair
Committee on Parks and Environmental Management
25 Aupuni Street, Room 209
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Mr. Yagong:
I am writing to request your assistance in keeping the Lili'uokalani Park perimeter road
closed to vehicular traffic. Although I live in your District, I work in Hilo during the week and I
have been going to the park three or four times each week. The renovations at the park have
transformed it into a wonderful place to go walking for physical exercise as well as to enjoy the
beauty of the area. There seems to be more and more members of the public coming to the
area for jogging, walking, biking and other activities. I believe the safety for everyone in the
park is enhanced by the fact that they do not have to keep an eye out for vehicles driving along
Lihiwai Street.
The improvements in the parking area at Coconut Island and Isles seems to allow for
adequate parking for the general public as well as handicapped individuals. I know that I have
spoken with your over the telephone about this issue, however, I am asking that you share this
correspondence with the entire Committee on Parks and Environmental Management. I have
spoken with other members of the community who use the park, and they also have stated that
they would like to keep the road closed.
If anyone on the Council has not had the opportunity to visit the park lately, I urge them
to make a visit and they will see that the improvements have turned the park into a glorious
place.
Please, keep the vehicles out of Lili'uokalani Park. Mahalo.
Sincerely,
/une Rabago
