To the Mayor and all Council Members: O~nc14 `
The closing of and keeping closed LIHIWAI STREET will truly be a
"WATER-SHED" event for this entire island.
A small project like this is, perhaps, just a drop in the bucket
but signifies the very near future, when the oil economy is no
longer around (The EXPERTS give a date of 2025). As one analyst
puts it we're going to live through an "economic and political
discontinuity of historic proportions"
Now is the time to project what this NEW MILLENNIUM will bring.
What the next two DECADES hold in store. The facts are out there
and must be brought into all future decisions.
The time has come to question and oppose the direction of
civilization, to redefine progress and start taking a stand
against the two most powerful institutions in the world today,
the OIL and AUTO industries.
Our entire economic system is based on GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZES,
from agriculture to the manufacturing of ENERGY. If all the
hidden costs (EXTERNALITIES) such as our MILITARY PRESENCE IN
THE PERSIAN GULF (Which TAXPAYERS foot the bill for) all the way
to and including GLOBAL WARMING were added in, OIL would be seen
as what it truly is.
But because everything in our PRESENT ECONOMY IS BASED ON OIL,
those in power will do anything to cling to it, to maintain the
ILLUSION of cheap oil, if for only just a little longer.
With George W. new ENERGY POLICY OF "POLLUTE & PILLAGE" this
ISLAND desperately needs to develop skills for the time when we
can't rely on PETROLEUM and friendly GOVERNMENT AGENCIES.
So I say hooray ! it is time to take back the STREETS and it is
time we ponder long and hard before we build any more roads on
this ISLAND, and in KEAAU the question should not be WHO SHOULD
PAY for the new ROADS but, rather should the new road/roads be
built at all.
This is a NEW MILLENNIUM, time for new IDEAS, for the old ones
have been proven wrong. So vote your intelligence not your
POCKETBOOK. Time to start HOMING in on the whispers, for an
ISLAND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE.
