Dear Councilman Yagong:
The Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Hawaii, at a special Board meeting -
today, took a position of supporting the reopening of Lihiwai Street in Lilioukalani Park,
with the proviso that the hours that the road remains open may be restricted. Our
organization, made up of over 400 members in the County of Hawaii took this position
because of the following reasons:
1. The ocean-end of the park should remain readily accessible to the handicapped,
elderly and "slower-moving" individuals.
2. Tourists and kamaainas should be allowed to experience one of the most
spectacular views on the Big Island.
3. Responding agencies should have access to assist in emergency situations.
4. Economic impact on businesses in the surrounding area.
We kindly ask for your consideration and further ask that the original intent of the park
renovations be reexamined before any decisions are made. We believe that a permanent
road closure will negate many of the original benefits of the park improvements.
