My neighbor, Adrienne ®ey, gave me a copy of your email dated Tuesday,
March 13, 2001 9:52 PM. thinking there would be an interest because of a
horrible experience that happened
at the park on March 6.
My husband had a total hip replacement on Jan 16. On March 1, his DR.
advised him to walk every day (with his walker) for a half hour. After 5
successful days walking at the Hilo Shopping Center, we decided to try the
"new park". As you know of the parking situation there, we parked at the
lot near the Nehon restaurant. We walked 15 minutes on the sidewalk and
nearing the Milo Hawaiian Hotel, turned around to walk back. We didn't
make it! About 100 yards from our car, my husband's legs gave out. I.
with the help of a lady jogger could not hold him up and down he went on
his face and knees on the cement. I called 911 using my cell phone. The
ambulance came (not quickly) and took him to ~R at Hilo Medical Center.
Thank God he didn;t throw his new joint out, but he was very sore and
scraped. I sprained my knee trying to hold him up-giving me a small
taste of what it's like
to be somewhat disabled for a week.
I believe this accident could have been avoided if we had access to the
disabled parking in the middle of the park area because we wouldn't have
been so far away from our car. We were there about 2:30 pm and there very
few people. A few joggers using the street and a few people walking in the
park. I can't see a problem opening the street. It's a shame that ,
at present, the disabled, elderly, residents and tourists cant enjoy the
beauty driving by the water and have access to disabled parking.
