HONORABLE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS
HAWAII COUNTY COUNCIL
HAWAII COUNTY BUII.DING
HILO HI 96720
SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT
Nanawale Estates Subdivision (County Owned and Private Streets)
Proposed Traffic Regulations
Section 24-2 of the Hawaii County Code states that all private roads which have been continuously used
by the general public for more than six months, and designated by the Council, are subject to the
provisions of the State (HRS, Chapter 291C) and the County (Chpater 24) Traffic Codes. This allows the
police department to enforce traffic regulations within the private roads after traffic regulations are
codified and appropriate traffic control devices are installed.
The Nanawale Community Association, Inc. (NCA) requested that the attached traffic regulations for
private streets within the Nanawale Estates Subdivision be codified. The bill also includes portions of the
County highways which are not presently included in the County traffic code. A location map is attached.
We ask for your review and consideration for adoption of the subject amendment as described in the
attached draft for an ordinance. Should you have any questions, please contact Richard Nishimura,
Traffic Division Chief at 961-8341.
