VIP offers educational groups, tracks compliance
and provides collateral agencies (such as the Judiciary, Adult Probation, and CPS) with
information. Our curriculum is based on the Duluth Abuse Irnervention Project model, is
25 weeks long and fees are based on a sliding scale.
The Pahoa group meets Tuesday evenings at the Pahoa Family Health Center and has 11
members. The Kau group meets on Thursday evenngs at the Family Support Center in
Naalehu and has 12 members.
Prior to VIP, participarns were retluired to drive to Hilo or Kailua to be in compliance
with their probation terms. Due to lack of transportation this often becomes a hardship
far the very family we are trying to help. Men would attend a few sessions then drop out
or be terminated for non-compliance, sending them back to the courts to be re-sentenced
to the program.
I3ay Clinic is developing the Healthy Inventions Project to build community awareness in
Puna. An advisory committee is in place, and a play on dating violence will be presented
in the high schools this May, funded by HMSA and a VISTA position.
The )3ay Clinic believes that "The way to fight the evil of domestic violence is to expose
it, to shine the light of day on it. And the best way to do that is by having the entire
community+take responsibility for the problem."
~®lr~~sti~ Vi®tenc~ St~t~stics f®r 200
Kau Puna
Abuse Cases Reported 47 248

Arrests 17 105

Violation of an Order 11 70

Arrests 3 29
File No,
I~1, Pr~r~~ g,~p C.
_:x.-
