Dear Councilman Yagong:
It is our understanding that you will propose a condition to the County
Operating Budget which will prohibit the current discriminatory practice of
the Hawaii Island Humane Society in precluding hunters from adopting
unwanted or stray dogs. Pig Hunters of Hawaii supports your proposal.
As you know, this has been an ongoing issue for well over a year. We
remain incredulous that an organization such as the Humane Society would
continue to promote a policy that "in order to prevent an~possibility of
injury to an animal, it is best to kill it". Yet this is precisely the policy in
effect.
We have no problem with the many fine people who work for the Humane
Society. They have been most helpful in re-uniting our members with lost
dogs. We hope your proposal will be adopted by the Council, and that the
management of the Humane Society will reevaluate its bizarre operating
practices.
