A Resolution Requesting The Office Of Havo~aiian Affairs Provide Funding For Public Education On The Cultural Significance And Preservation Of Native Hawaiian Burials. Whereas, the Puna Coast is home to numerous Native Hawaiian gravesites; and Whereas, such sites are of historic and cultural significance and therefore are protected under state law; and Whereas, sacred gravesites are being vandalized and desecrated; and Whereas, these disrespectful acts are often perpetrated by unaware visitors; and Whereas, Ho`oulu Lahui, a Native Hawaiian education group based in Puna has helped to bring this problem to light; and Whereas, to deter these acts, public education is necessary; and Whereas, the State of Hawaii, Historic Preservation Division, is devising an education program to teach the public of the need to preserve Native Hawaiian gravesites; and Whereas, Ho`oulu Lahui and the State of Hawaii, Historic Preservation Division, are working together to develop a video as part of the public education program; and Whereas, some monies for this project have been secured from the Big Island Visitors Bureau; and Whereas, additional funds are necessary to produce and distribute this video statewide; and Whereas, the Council supports both Ho`oulu Lahui and the State of Hawai`i's efforts to alleviate the problem of gravesite desecration. Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved By The Council Of The County Of Hawaii that it requests the Office Of Hawaiian Affairs support the proposed public education program on the cultural significance of Native Hawaiian gravesites by assisting in the funding of the informational video being developed by Ho`oulu Lahui and State of Hawaii, Historic Preservation Division. Be It Finally Resolved that copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, State of Hawaii Historic Preservation Division, Big Island Visitors Bureau, Ho`oulu Lahui and the State of Hawaii Division Of Conservation and Resource Enforcement.
