SUBJECT: Permanent Funding for Domestic Violence Unit
Chair Arakaki and Members of the Council,
I have been an emergency physician at Hilo Medical Center for 25 ytars and sadly, have seen
countless victims of domestic violence, with injuries ragging from bruises to death. Our
community has been very proactive with the demonstration project through the prosecator's
office. It is my impression, that although incidents of domestic violence continue, the response
to assisting victims and addressing prosecution of and treatment for batterers has been very
positive. I have attended a number of the Domestic Violence Interagency Team meetings and
have been very impressed with the expertise and caring of the members of the DVTAT and the
Domestic Violence Unit.
I respectfully request that the Counci! provide permanent funding for the Domestic Violence
Unit of the office of the Prosecuting Attorney. Thank you for assisting this critical public health
initiative.
