Your Committee on Human Services and Economic Development, to which was referred
Resolution No. 63-01, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 63-01, transmitted by Council Chair James Y. Arakaki via Communication
No. 149, dated March 8, 2001, proposed the adoption of a resolution supporting efforts to
further develop the cruise ship industry by establishing Hilo Harbor as a homeport for a
cruise ship and promoting Hilo as a cruise ship destination.
Upon adoption, the resolution will be transmitted to Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim and
to State Representative Jerry Chang, who has introduced a related resolution in the Hawaii
State Legislature to create a task force to study the possibility of establishing a permanent
homeport for a cruise ship in Hilo Harbor.
Your Committee on Human Services and Economic Development is in accord with
the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 63-01 and recommends its adoption.
