Sa~dr"za Scam is Professor of Psychology enaeritca, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA,
where she was Commonwealth Professor of Psychology from 1983 to 1995. From 1977 to 1983,
Starr was Professor of Psychology at Yale University and from 1973 to 1977, Professor of Child
Psychology at the University of Minnesota. From August 1993 to July 1994, Starr was the
Kerstin Ilesselgren Visiting Professor in Sweden, where she was affiliated for periods of the yeaz
with Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala Universities. She was educated at Vassar College and
I-Iarvard University, where she earned the Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Relations in 1965.
From 1995 to 1997, Dr. Scary served as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the 13oazd of
Directors of KinderCare Learning Centers, Inc., the largest child care company in the United
States. Since 1990, Starr has served on the KuaderCaze Boazd of Directors, and she was elected
Chairman of the I3oard in July 1994. After retiring as CEO, she remained a Director of the
Company until December 1999.
Her research on behavior genetics, intelligence, and child development has been publashed in
more than 200 articles grad four books on intelligence, child care, and family issues. In 1985, she
won the National Book Award of the American Psychological Association for Mother Care/Other
Care. She has received two awards for her research contributions: The Distinguished
Contributions to Research grad Public Poficy award (American Psychological Association, 1989)
and the James McKeen Cattell Award (American Psychological Society, 1993).
She has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American
Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Psychological Society, and the
American Psychological Association. She has been elected by her colleagues to many posts in
professional organizations, including the Boards of Directors of the American Psychological
Society and the American Psychological Association, to the Council of AAAS, to the Presidency
of the Society for feesearch in Child Developrraent and the Behavior Genetics Association, to the
Chairm~anslaip of the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology, and to the Executive
Boards of several other organizations. From May 1996 to May 1997, she served as President of
the American Psychological Society.
Sandra Starr was co-Editor of the journal Current Directions in Psychalo~ical Science (1991-
1995), Editor of Develot~mental Psvchola~y (1980-1986), Associate Editor of the American
Ps~cholog~ist (1976-1980), and served an the editorial boards of several other journals.
Since retiring axed moving the I-Iawaii, Dr. Scary has served as Vice President of the Kona
Outdoor Circle, Vice President of the Kana Orchid Society, Vice President of Citizens for
Equitable and Responsible Government (CERG), and on the board of the Kona Coffer Council.
I-Ier farnily consists of four children three daughters and a son, who range in age frown 27 to 38
and four delightfial grandchildren. The household c mains three small dogs and hundreds of
orchids. She lives on a 5-acre farm and xraarkets leer own brand of Kona coffee.
