COUNTY OF HAVJAIi
Mr. James Arakaki
Hawaii County Council Chairpezson
County of Howell
25 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Mr. Arakakl:
We are writing to request another public hearing of the County Finance
Committee concerning the county appropriation of two million tax payer
dollars for a fruit irradiation plant. please 11sC Chia as a numbered
communication. We believe more public hearings are needed to discuss
marketing, safety and financial issues. We question whether Hawaii County
tax payers should subsidize a plant that would be used by all of the
state, and why we should aubsidiae a plant that should be profitable
on its own. Also we wonder about the location of the plant being in
Hilo when Honolulu is the mayor traneporation hub to the mainland,
Europe, and Che Orient. It aeeme the money could be put to better use
to help some of the social and health problems we have haze 1n the county.
The way the mayor and County Council are giving away tax payer money without
explaining to us exactly where the money 1s going seems irresponsible and
borders on gross negligence. These issues still need to be addressed in
more public hearings. we know that the president of the Hawaii County
Medical Society waited several hours to speak at the previous public hearing
but was unable to stay the full 12 hours and give testimony.
Thank you for your attention to our request.
Sincerely,
Robert D. Irvine, M. D.
