Dear Chairman Arakaki.
We are disturbed by the resent public hearing regarding the proposed expenditure of
$2,000,000 taxpayer money for construction of a fruK irradiation facllky. 8y statements
in the Tribune-Harald prior to the hearing, It was pretty Clear that the vast mp~Ority of
the Counai opposed tnie proposal. However, when the hearing actwlly took ptaoe,
the Coundl apparrrrnly had a change of heart. Many of the oommunily members who
were opposed to thv plan were not given the opportunity to speak because they were
scheduled at the end of the extremely long meeting, and had left attar wafting many
hoUB
We believe that tlw committee Chair is ineorrad when he Stated that he believed the
tt» major issue wFis whether or not the County should spend the money. He
appeared to try to Ilmft the discussion only to the economic issue, when there era
marry other even more important issues, Such as hNRh and safety. Aa an educator
and a health care prote9sional, we are extremely concerned about the weMare of
Hawaii's children, and the quality of our environment.
For these reasons we demand that additional public meetings with the Flnartce
Committee be hekl to addrssa the appropriations issue, and with other Committees to
address the heaith and safety issues, and that It be a "numbered communication for
conslderntlon "
