RE: Liliuokalani Yark
Bobby Jean,
A whilcback, at a function we both attended, I spoke to you in support of loping the Lihiwai
road open. My paimary r~~~on was to make the parkas accessible to the ,general public as
possible. Closing the roadway, I fah, would defeat that purpose and underutilize those areas
closed. historically, we "Waiakea old tuners" remember f~rnily plienlcs as the Tnain use of the
park. (fishing was taboo at that tune y'lanoa~v} I remember late afternoon picnics, witls farrxilies on
gozas, eating musubi, seam, koko aa~d the smell of B13Q meat in the air.
I run (walk actually) a couple of times during the week, along that area and through the park. We
hauls taken my Brother on picnics on several occasions since the renovations and sometimes push
her wheel chair around the park for fresh air and exercise. (ours that is) I have also made it a point
to take special notice of the situation since the reopening, just to see if any adverse situations have
resulted.
Well one big obvious change has occurred, and any regular user of the area will agree. MOKE
PBOPLE ARF USINQ TH1G PARK, Isn't that great? In addition, it didn't cause me or anyane
else any inconvenience. (jogging that is) since the sidewalks are quilt adequate. Most of the
walkers and joggers are casual exercisers anyway, and are walking. °1`i~e serious runners use the
track at 1'"Iilo I'Iigh. Vehicular p~aftic was also not a problem, but speeding concerns could be
addressed with multiple speed bumps.
I usually run on the weekdays. I guess weekends might see a few more walking, but we'll also ace
a lot more picnic goers too. More reasan to leave it open. Closing after dark, is no big deal, I
guess, but be reasonable with flee hours. Summers are lighted ti117:~d5 or so. Allow families to
pack up their leisure. If vandalism is a concern, as one police officer used as his reason for
closing, then close it from 9:00 or 10:04 pm to 6:00 am when most of these problems occur.
i [Istened to the many people testifying against opening the road. Curious, during that time, I
didn°t sec that many people walking the park. Who are these people anyway.
The open road has not taken anything away from this beautiful garden park, but the added
parking spaces allowed more people to enjoy. We can't worry about 4he few inconsiderate drivers
~vho might play their radios too loud, or cause other minor problem, Closing that road will not
eliminate those lolos.
°Tiake a ride down there some afternoon. Sit on a bench and listen to the kids playing, see the;
families sitting on gozais (now they take plastic chairs and blue tarp I noticed) and iaanell the burnt
~13Q nrcat on the hibachi,.., now that's the Japanese Park I remember and enjoy.
