~®n Jac®bs <br /> 1 5-2722 Popaa Street <br /> Pahoa, HI 96778 <br /> 808/965-0361 <br /> email: donjC~aloha.net <br /> July 4, 2001 <br /> Hawaii County Council <br /> Finance Committee <br /> 25 Aupuni Street <br /> Milo, Hawaii 96720 <br /> Subject: The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100 <br /> proposed by Councilman Curtis Tyler. <br /> Dear Council Person: <br /> I respectfully request that the Hawaii County Council Finance Committee kill <br /> the bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100 proposed by <br /> Councilman Curtis Tyler. <br /> Approval of this bill would discriminate against the owners of land in the <br /> lower economic areas. <br /> <br /> The current tax rate for vacant (unimproved) land is $10.00 per $1,000 of <br /> assessed valuation. <br /> With a $100 minimum, owners of land with assessed values from $2,000 to <br /> $4,000 would be paying taxes at the rate~of from $25 to $50 per $1,000. <br /> Land recently covered by lava has an assessed value of $100 per parcel <br /> At a $100 minimum, the tax rate on these parcels would be $1,000 per <br /> $1,000 of assessed value. That's one hundred times grea~~~- than the <br /> currently established tax rate. That would be gross discrimination. <br /> Additionally, I respectfully request that land recently covered by lava be <br /> removed from the tax roles until the infrastructure is restored to provide <br /> road access and water service.
