Subject: The bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100
proposed by Councilman Curtis Tyler.
Dear Council Person:
I respectfully request that the Hawaii County Council Finance Committee kill
the bill to increase the minimum real estate taxes to $100 proposed by
Councilman Curtis Tyler.
Approval of this bill would discriminate against the owners of land in the
lower economic areas.
The current tax rate for vacant (unimproved) land is $10.00 per $1,000 of
assessed valuation.
With a $100 minimum, owners of land with assessed values from $2,000 to
$4,000 would be paying taxes at the rate~of from $25 to $50 per $1,000.
Land recently covered by lava has an assessed value of $100 per parcel
At a $100 minimum, the tax rate on these parcels would be $1,000 per
$1,000 of assessed value. That's one hundred times grea~~~- than the
currently established tax rate. That would be gross discrimination.
Additionally, I respectfully request that land recently covered by lava be
removed from the tax roles until the infrastructure is restored to provide
road access and water service. This will save the county tax department the
incremental cost of servicing these properties.
