Dear Chair Arakaki and Councilmembers:
The Hawaii Government Employees Association Retirees Unit at its 14th Biennial Assembly
unanimously adopted Resolution No. 2 which states: "Encourage the Mayors and County
Councils of Hawaii, Honolulu, Maui and Kauai to Continue to Support Senior Centers." Our
retirees are extremely appreciative of the tremendous efforts of the Council and staff in providing
meaningful activities for them. They are concerned, however, that many activities may be
eliminated because of anticipated budget shortfalls.
Many senior programs have received grants through the Federal government or from national
foundations. We encourage the counties to seek these funds so that programs for seniors can be
enhanced.

RESOLUTION N0.2
ENCOURAGE THE MAYORS AND COUNTY COUNCILS OF HAWAII, HONOLULU,
MAUI, AND KAUAI TO CONTINUE TO SUPPORT SENIOR CITIZEN CENTERS
WHEREAS, the 8,700 members of HGEA/AFSCME Local 152 Retirees Unit are senior
citizens of our communities; and
WHEREAS, HGEA/AFSCME Retiree members participate in Senior Citizen Center
activities on all islands; and
WHEREAS, one of the greatest assets of our counties is our senior citizens who volunteer
their services to the community; and
WHEREAS, when the counties are faced with financial shortages Senior Citizen Centers
and Senior Citizen Programs are threatened with reduction of services and/or closure; NOW
THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED, that the delegates at this 14th Biennial General Assembly of the
HGEA/AFSCME Retirees Unit, June 2001, express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the
Mayors and Councils of each county and encourage them to continue to provide and improve on
senior citizen programs by seeking funding at the Federal level and/or through national
foundations; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be sent to the Mayors and
Councils of the Counties of Hawaii, Honolulu, Maui and Kauai.
