HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP PC 027 06/05/2001 2000-2002 REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON PLANNING DATE: June 5, 2001 Re: C-231 PLACE: Councilroom TIME: 10:11 a.m. Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 95720 Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Communication No. 23l transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim dated May 22, 2001, reports as follows: Communication No. 231 recommends the appointment of the following individuals to the Kailua Village Design Commission to serve terms ending on December 31, 2003: Mr. Jay E. Hanson, of no political affiliation, will represent Council District 7. He is currently employed as a programmer for Computer Vectors and previously served on the Hawaii County Planning Commission. Mr. K. Angel Pilago, a 55-year resident of Hawaii, of no political affiliation, will represent Council District 8. He is currently an employment counselor with the State of Hawaii, Department of Labor, and a current member of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, the Kona Hawaiian Civic Club, and a past member of the Hawaii Historic Foundation and the Native Hawaiian Historic Preservation Council. Ms. Robin Hurlbut, an 1 1-year resident of Hawaii, who is a Republican, will represent Council District 8. She is currently a tour director with Panache Destination Management and a landscaper with her own firm, Robin's Nest Landscape Maintenance. She is a member of the Kona Outdoor Circle, Hawaii Professional Gardeners Association, Hawaii Island Landscapers Association, Aloha Performing Arts Center and Recycle Hawaii. These individuals will replace Kimi Cook-McKie, James Dumaguin. and Robert Vander Veer, whose terms expired on December 31, 2000. Pursuant to Article 7, Chapter 25, Section 25-7-2, Hawaii County Code, the mayor shall appoint members to the commission to be confirmed by the Council. PC-27 PC-27 Page 2 June 5, 2001 Mr. Hansen explained to Your Committee that he is serving on this Commission because he has seen the traffic worsen in Kailua and decided to "come out and see what I could do to help my community solve some of these problems". Mr. Pilago explained that the Commission needs to work on positive things to reach the goals, that optimism is a key factor. Ms. Hurlbut explained that the Commission will be the key to keeping the area strong and vibrant. She further explained that Kailua Village is a central location for people to gather and that it has its own distinct personality and she would like to keep it as such. Your Chair mentioned that the single biggest thing about Kailua Village is the pier and that it should be renovated and designed to allow the water to flow freely below it. She also stated that Kailua is an attractive area for growth and she would like to see families use the pier for fishing and other activities. Your Committee on Planning recommends the approval of the appointments of Mr. Tay E. Hanson, Mr. K. Angel Pilago, and Ms. Robin Hurlbut to the Hawaii County Kailua Village Design Commission.
