DATE: .Tune 5, 2001 Re: C-92/Res. No. 36-01
PLACE: Councilroom
TIME: 10:11 a.m.
Chair and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 36-O1, transmitted
by Mayor Harry Kim per Communication No. 92, dated .fanuary 12, 2001, regarding the
naming of streets in the County of Hawaii, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 36-0 l authorizes the approval of the street names for the roadway within
the Pahoa Village, Puna, Hawaii.
The Planning Commission at its December 15, 2000, meeting approved the name for the
roadway in Exhibit "A" as follows:
Pahoa Village Road - after the name of the Village of Pahoa
Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22 of the Hawaii County Code, the
Council is authorized to adopt street names for Hawaii County's unnamed roadways.
Originally heard on March 20, 2001, this measure was deferred because Rene Siracusa
testified that the people of Pahoa Town were not aware of this change in the street name
and asked that ample time be given to the residents to discuss this matter before the
measure can be considered in Your Committee.
After the measure was deferred in March, Pahoa businesses were notified of the proposed
change. At today's meeting, Committee Member Gary Safarik proposed that we pass this
measure, but delay the implementation by one month so the residents can react to and
make the necessary changes to compensate for the change.

When Committee Member Curtis Tyler asked why the street name change was necessary,
Your Chair explained that this was part of the County's mission to name all the streets for
``9l 1"purposes.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution
No. 36-O1 and recommends its adoption.
Respectfully submitted,
