r .s^y
24 April 1997
To: Hawaii County Council
Committee on Finance
25 Aupuni St.
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
From: Bonnie Bator
P.O. Box 565
Kurtistown, Hawaii 96760
Re: Comm. 212 (Bill 62)
Comm. 212.05 (Res. 71)
A Resolution supporting the development and construction of a private post
harvest treatment facility (FOOD IRRADIATION FACILITY) in the County of
Hawaii.
Aloha: Members of Hawaii County Council, Committee on Finance,
Please vote NO! on Comm. 212.05 (Res. 71
myself and other folks that love the Big Island (Island of Hawaii)
DO NOT SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF A
PRIVATE POST HARVEST TREATMENT FACILITY (Food Irradiation Facility)
IN THE COUNTY OF HAWAII.
It is unfair for this Committee on Finance to pass Res. 71;
We the people that live here know there are other safe methods of generating
economic stability without exposure of lethal radioactive material.
Each individual here must know someone with Cancer.
The poor workers who will work in this proposed food irradiation facility will
have their cancer chances quad tripled.
The people who live near this proposed facility will have their chances of
contracting cancer tripled.
It is unfair that AT THE EXPENSE of the general community, "some" farmers
tend to become millionaires.
Awa or Kava is an agriculture crop with a very large return in terms of
large amounts of money per pound. A lot of wild indigenous Awa patches
have been bull dozed under to make way for Papaya acreage.
The Island of Hawaii must replant their Gold mine Awa (Kava Kava);
Ride the wave of success with an agriculture crop with proven demand.
Please see enclosed visual aid.
