Dear Chairman Arakaki:
For many months, we have been listening to the debate about irradiation of
agricultural products. Since not everyone is in agreement on this issue, a
number of authorities have been asked to come to our community--most on
their own time and without any compensation whatsoever--to participate
in public informational forums, answer questions and help us learn the
truth about this process.
*Independent experts say irradiation does not harm food or lessen i t s
nutritional value. The opponents disagree.
'Independent experts say food treated by irradiation is not harmful to
humans and is not a cancer threat. The opponents disagree.
'Independent experts say an irradiation facility can be safety built and
operated. The opponents disagree.
*Independent experts say irradiation treatment will create jobs and make
Big Island agriculture more feasible by allowing more local products to be
sold outside of Hawaii. The opponents say large-scale production is a bad
thing.
'Independent experts say Mainland stores and consumers are willing t o
sell and purchase irradiated products. The opponents threaten them wit h
boycotts and harassment and deny them the freedom of choice.
'Independent experts who participated in the public forums are qualified
and knowledgeable by virtue of their education, specialized training,
validated scientific research, and firsthand experience. The opponents are
not.

The County should base any decision related to an irradiation facility upon
the Truth, and not upon threats or misinformation circulated by those on
any side of the issue.
The facts I have learned convince me that an irradiation facility would be
a good thing for our community and its farmers. I hope the Council w i I I
help to make this idea a reality.
