REQUEST: Council action is being requested to amend the Salary Ordinance of 2001 (Ordinance No. 01 59). In Section 3(D), we would like to correct annual salary figures, delete hourly rates, and increase MH-4 and MH-5 rates. In Section 7.10(c), we would like to increase compensation for the Hawaii County Band Director. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): Council action is needed to amend the original ordinance. Section 3(D): ? Annual salaries for Hawaii County Band and West Hawaii Band have been corrected. The figures submitted originally were erroneous as the annual salary did not equal twelve times the monthly salary. ? Hourly rates for the bands have been deleted as these rates are not used in payroll calculations. Hawaii County Band and West Hawaii Band salaries are prorated based on the number of practices and performances in a month. ? MH-4 and MH-5 on the salary scale for West Hawaii Band have been increased by 20% instead of 10%. (This is the pay rates for the Band Director and the Assistant Band Director.) Section 7.1~(c): ? Increase the compensation level for the Hawaii County Band Director from A-7 to A-9. As the only full time member of the Hawaii County Band, the band director must not only be an excellent musician but a leader and a keeper of the flame. The Hawaii County Band has become more and more polished over the years. They play more difficult pieces and they play them better. One of the drawbacks to finding a person who is able to continue the constantly improving trend of the band is the salary offered to the director. The salary needs to be competitive so that the band can attract such candidates.
