HOLOKAI -HONOR THE VOYAGERS

nearly 30,000 volunteers who will work together to make this festival a reality and attract
nearly a million people; and
WHEREAS, the theme for "Aloha Festivals 2001" is "Ho `ohanohano I Na Holokai -
Honor the Voyagers," which celebrates ocean voyagers such as the master navigator of the

Onizuka; and
WHEREAS, the theme of "Aloha Festivals 2001 " links these ancient Polynesian
mariners with modern Hawaiian navigators who, within the past twenty five years, restored
cultural pride in Hawai `i' s seafaring heritage through the voyages of Hokule `a, Makali `i
and Hawai `iloa by sailing over vast stretches of ocean throughout the Polynesian Triangle as
their ancestors once did -guided only by natural wayfinders: sun, moon, stars, wind, ocean
currents, and seabirds; and
WHEREAS, "Aloha Festivals 2001 " also celebrates and honors people of other
cultures, many of whom left their homelands far away in search of a better life to immigrate
to an unknown land called Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, this year's festival events are scheduled throughout the state during the
months of September and October and in Hawai `i County from September 14-30, 2001.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
