U~ RESOLUTION CONDEMNING THE BRUTAL AND DELIBERATE ACTS OF WAR AGAINST THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND SUPPORTING PRESIDENT BUSH IN HIS EFFORTS TO DEFEND AMERICA, PROTECT ITS CITIZENS AND RESPOND DECISIVELY TO THOSE WHO PERPETRATED SUCH ACTS. WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, the United States of America was suddenly, brutally, and deliberately attacked by terrorists; and WHEREAS, these terrorists commandeered four commercial airliners, crashing two into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and causing the fourth to crash in Pennsylvania; and WHEREAS, thousands of innocent people have been killed and thousands more injured as a direct result of these horrific attacks; and WHEREAS, the lives and livelihoods of countless other citizens have been forever impacted by these deliberate acts of war against this country; and WHEREAS, these brutal attacks, the first of this century and the deadliest ever launched against this nation and its people, specifically targeted symbols of American strength and freedom, in a bold attempt to intimidate and weaken these cornerstones of democracy and, thus, break the spirit of our people; and WHEREAS, to the contrary, such attacks have clearly served to further unify and rally our individual and collective resolve and spirit of patriotism, as demonstrated by the heroic deeds, tireless efforts, and spiritual outpourings of millions throughout the land. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII THAT it condemns the brutal and deliberate acts of war against the United States of America and strongly supports President Bush in his efforts to defend America and protect its citizens against further attacks and respond decisively to those who perpetrated such acts by whatever means he deems appropriate. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, on behalf of the citizens of this County and in the true spirit of aloha, the Council offers its deepest sympathies, prayers and personal comfort to the families, friends, and loved ones of all who perished in this great tragedy. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council extends its greatest appreciation, love, and gratitude to the brave men and women of our civilian and military public safety organizations for their unwavering and selfless efforts to rescue the dead and injured and to protect and comfort the living. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to President George W. Bush, Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka, Representative Patsy T. Mink, Representative Neil Abercrombie, Governor Benjamin Cayetano, Mayor Harry Kim, and National Association of Counties President Javier Gonzales. Dated at ,Hawaii, this day of , 2001.
