COUNTY COUNCIL

September 18, 2001
Harry Kim, Mayor
Hawaii County
Hawaii County Building
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Dear Mayor Kim,
With the concurrence of Council Chair James Y. Arakaki, I would like to invite you to
informally brief the Council's Committee on Human Services and Economic Development on
plans and strategies under consideration at the state and county level to sustain and invigorate our
economy during these very difficult times.
Like you and my fellow Council members, I am deeply concerned that our visitor industry and
agricultural exports will suffer without a concerted effort to sustain commercial airlift and
national consumer confidence in Hawaii's attraction as a visitor destination.
Your meeting with Governor Cayetano on September 19~' and a scheduled strategy session of
local tourism leaders on September 21$` will undoubtedly shed light on current and proposed
initiatives to meet these challenges.
Accordingly, I wish to invite you to speak to my committee on September 26`h at 3:00 p.m. in
the Councikoom. Our committee has a scheduled presentation beginning at 1:30. By 3:00 p.m., I
am confident that our agenda will be cleared to allow uninterrupted attention to your remarks.
Thank you for your consideration of this special request. In troubled times, we will certainly
profit from the free flow of information and perspectives to guide our economy in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
~7ancy Pisluo, Chair
Committee on Human Services & Economic Development
Hawaii County Council
