HS&EDC-14 Page 2 September 26, 2001 Comm. 261: PRESENTATION REGARDING THE RECENTLY INTRODUCED CARIBBEAN TREE FROGS ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII From Earl William Campbell, III, Project Leader, USDA National Wildlife Research Center, Hawaii Field Station, dated June 29, 2001, regarding his proposed presentation to the Hawaii County Council on the Caribbean tree frogs. Comm. 261.1: From Earl William Campbell, III, Project Leader, USDA National Wildlife Research Center, Hawaii Field Station, dated July 19, 2001, submitting a general summary on the issue of two introduced tree frogs species (Eleutherodacrylus coqua and E. planirostris), the spread of tree frog populations throughout the Hawaiian Islands, the efficacy of current laboratory and field trials aimed at eradication, and the joint efforts of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Hawaii Department of Agriculture, and State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources to spearhead a coordinated effort to control introduced tree frogs in infested sites. Comm. 261.2: From Human Services & Economic Development Committee Chair Nancy Pisicchio, dated August 24, 2001, transmitting a series of five maps showing the spread of the Caribbean Frogs on the Island of Hawaii from 1997 to June 2001. (The maps were inadvertently omitted from Communication 261.1, which transmitted a letter and one map from Earl Wm. Campbell, IIL) Comm. 261.3: From Earl Wm. Campbell III, Project Leader, USDA National Wildlife Research Center, Hawaii Field Station, dated August 26, 2001, requesting that their August 28~' presentation be postponed. States the Hawaii Department of Agriculture and other County, State, and Federal agencies are currently planning an organized response to the introduced tree frog issue and requests that this presentation be rescheduled to September 26`h as they will be able to more accurately incorporate planned efforts by the aforementioned agencies. Comm. 261.4: From Lillian Kamigaki, Program Support Assistant, USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Hawaii Field Station, dated September 7, 2001, stating that Dr. Earl Campbell is out-of--state at this time but will be available to do a presentation on the Caribbean tree frogs on September 26, 2001. HS&EDC-14 Page 3 September 26, 2001 Comm. 261.5: From Lyle Wong, Ph.D., Plant Industry Administrator, State of Hawaii Department of Agriculture, dated September 6, 2001, regarding their efforts to control the tree frogs using pesticides and various quarantine control strategies. States he looks forward to discussing these initiatives with the HS&EDC on September 26th. Comm. 261.6: From Human Services & Economic Development Committee Chair Nancy Pisicchio, dated September 4, 2001, requesting Earl Wm. Campbell, III, and Dr. Lyle Wong to co-present on the issue of the Caribbean tree frogs at the HS&EDC's September 26, 2001, meeting. States there is a mounting public interest in the topic of tree frogs throughout our state. Their impacts and prevalence on the Island of Hawaii is of particular concern.
