Dear Chairperson Pisicchio:
For the past 3 years Hawaii Gold Cacao Tree, Inc. (HGCT) has been researching and studying farming
and processing of cacao and manufacturing of cocoa by
products and chocolate iII Hawaii. As a result of
HGCT's research, HGCT has developed a solid business. plan. that will provide. a new crop for Hawaii's
fanners and a new industry for .Hawaii's citizens. HGCT's business plain has been reviewed and analysed
by over 150 Hawaii and world experts in cacao propagatioaa and nursery practices, cacao farming and
harvesting, post harvesting practices (fermentation anal drying), cacao processing, chocolate
manufacturing, cocoa commodity trading, marketing and sales, etc. 'These experts have provided HGCT
sound advice on sustainable cacao farming practices and on e#Ficient cacao processing and chocolate
manufacturing to snake high quality cocoa by-products aa~d chocolate.
HGCT respeetfully requests the opportunity to present the following to the Committee on I-Itatnan
Services and Economic Developmenton October 9, 2001:
• HGCT's plans of farming and processing cacao and manufacturing chocolate in Hawaii
• Update the Committee on HGCT's most recent activities
• Development of an education and resource center for cacao farmers to use in order to discuss
issues, learn techniques-and conduct workshops in conjunction with the State of Hawaii
Agricultural Department, United States Department of Agriculture and the Pacific Basin
Agricultural Resource Center
• Development of a strategy to promote sustainable cacao farming on the Big Island of Hawaii and
the State of Hawaii
HGCT looks forward to the opportunity to present in front of the Committee on Human Services and
Ecanamic Development.
