Subject: Gateway Mall Rezoning

I remain opposed to the rezoning of land in Kea'au for the purpose of constructing the
"gateway mall" as per my previous testimony.
Reasons:
? Increased traffic and congestion in the area.
? Interference with the newly constructed Kea'au by-pass
? Loss of local character of Kea'au
? Resulting strip development along Highway 11
? Impact on ascetics along the highway that most of our tourists use to travel to
Volcanoes National Park
? Loss of agricultural land
Alternative:
? Renovate Kea'au village in a style consistent with historic values and culture as
previously promised by Shipman. In renovating Kea'au village include local cralfis
and food shops as well as green areas and farmers' market. Such a shopping area
would not only blend in with local culture and improve local life styles, it would also
be an attraction for tourists.
