WH~I~~AeS, the State Department of the Attorney General Crime Prevention and Justice
Assistance Division has awarded the Violent Crime Unit Grant monies to the Hawaii County Police
Department; and
WH~IZ~AS, these funds will provide for the creation of two (2) Police evidence Specialist I
(Temporary) positions; and
WhI~REo4S, these positions will supplement the crime lab and detective staff by assisting in
the search, recovery, preservation, and marking of physical evidence at the crime scenes; and
WB-I~REAS, with the increase in numbers of drug and alcohol related crimes, including
accidents, the additional staffing for the crime lab will be a big asset to the detectives, criminalists,
and patrol officers; and
WHEREAS, Article V, Section 5-1.3(c) of the Hawaii County Charter states that the Mayor has
the power to "Create positions...forrohich appropriations have been made by the council...".

Attorney General Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division's Violent Crime Unit Grant.
