Mahalo for the County Council Resolution, developed by Julie Jacobson, with the help of Nancy
Pisicchio and others. Plan To Protect strongly supports the Resolution as written.
These lands are of utmost importance and surround the present National Park. The presence of
ancient Hawaiian culture is evidenced by the multitude of ancient features and sites both above
ground and below that have lain relatively untouched since ancient times.
Protection can best be achieved by preserving not only the immediately adjacent 236 acres, as
envisioned by U.S. Senate Bill S.1057, but the entire tract being offered by the present owners
representing 805 acres. The acquisition ofthe entire 805 acres was originally proposed by Ms.Patsy
Mink in House Bill H.R. 1906.
By annexing all of these lands to the Park, the natural beauty of the Park would be enhanced and
scenic value increased. Most important is the preservation of Hawaiian field systems, burial
grounds and trails as well as ensuring a needed buffer for the aquifer which empties into Honaunau
Bay immediately adjacent to the Park; an area enjoyed by hundreds of visitors daily for it"s
abundant coral reef and prolific marine life.
