I and writimg to urge the 1-Iawaii County Council to adopt Resolution No. 149-01 in support of
Congresswoman patsy Mir~l~'s bill H_R. 1906, which aa~thorizes the expansion of Pu'uhonu~ O
1-lonauna~a National Park by up to 805 acres.
This proposed expansion of 1~'uhonua O 1--Ior~,una~a National Park is of utmost importance. These
lids that surround the present parr have lain relativel~r untouched since ancient times, and the
presence of tl~e ancier£t I-lawaii~€n cultus
e is evide~aced by the multitude of featu~s and sites both
~.bove groua~d a€~d below. The lineal and cultural descendents of these lands hold them. in deep
reverence, as does the South bona. community.
~'or the 400,000+ visitors that explore the parr yearly, this experience is often the only true glimpse
that they get of the historical and spiritual essence of the Hawaiian culture.
The proposed purchase would expand the park by 805 acres and would provide a very necessary
b~ff~r fr®m c$~v~l®prn~nt for the Mire p~rir area, ssu~ing a natural view plane anti sense of pleas
sm impcsa~tant to protect a park with such worldwide si-iificance and ancient historical importance.
another factor on favor of the purchase of 805 acres is the pristine AA. quality of the near-shore
environment a1€~ng the Hounaai coastline. percolation of pollutants, hu}nan waste anal
sedimentation. through il~e pe~-n€eable la~:a fields is a major threat to the marine environment
~~,;hereve~r devel~sprn~t takes place. As rampa~tt development threatens the entire West 1-lawaii
coastline, it is important to focus on preserving such currently pristine and culturally significant
places as 1-~or~a~~nau.
please help support the overwhelming z~ajo~ity - up to 90% by recent polls -who are calling for the
preservation of 1-lava°ai.i's special places. The U.S. l.,egislature stands ready to alsprove the pu~°ch
of these potential parklands, and your statement of support, in the f®rnn of a resolutflor~, ~~~ill help to
make this a reality.
